PORTLAND — Bells will ring, Catholic churches willl be draped in bunting and signs outside will welcome the denomination’s new leader once cardinals in Rome name a new pope.
Dave Guthro, spokesman for the Diocese of Portland, said the new pope will be included in Eucharistic prayers and church bells will ring – depending on the timing – at the cathedral in Portland, the basilica in Lewiston and other churches when the election is announced.
Signs outside churches will declare “Habemus Papam” {“We have a pope!”) along with the pope’s chosen name, Guthro said. Many churches will have white and gold/yellow bunting draped on doors between the election and installation of the new pope, Guthro said, and special masses will be held.
Portraits of the new pope will also be displayed, he said.
As of late morning Eastern time Wednesday, the cardinals have held three rounds of balloting, but have yet to name a new pope.
