Beach to Beacon beats 5-minute registration mark

It took just four minutes, 58 seconds on Friday morning for online registrants to claim 4,000 slots for this year’s TD Beach to Beacon 10K road race.

This will be the 16th running of the race, founded by Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson and scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3, in Cape Elizabeth.

Runners have one more chance to get one of 1,900 remaining entries, which will be chosen in a lottery on March 25. Lottery entries will be accepted through March 22 at www.beach2beacon.org.

A record 6,117 runners from 17 countries, 44 states and more than 240 Maine cities and towns finished the 6.2-mile course last year. The race debuted in 1998 with 2,408 finishers.

Online registration for the kids’ fun run will begin Monday and continue through June 30.

BASKETBALL

D-LEAGUE: The Maine Red Claws acquired guard Jermaine Taylor. Taylor, 26, a 2009 second-round draft selection of the Washington Wizards, also played for teams in Spain, Israel and China this season before joining the NBA Development League.

He is expected to be in the lineup Saturday night when the Red Claws face the Austin Toros.

TENNIS

BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Top-ranked Novak Djokovic advanced to the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 54 minutes at Indian Wells, Calif.

Djokovic extended his winning streak to 22 matches dating to Oct. 31, when he last lost to American Sam Querrey in Paris. The Serb is 17-0 this year, including two titles.

SKIING

WORLD CUP: American teenager Mikaela Shiffrin’s showdown with Tina Maze for the World Cup slalom title Saturday at Lenzerheide, Switzerland, comes as her rival from Slovenia is having one of the greatest season in 47 years of World Cup racing.

Shiffrin set the stage with a Twitter message — two days before her 18th birthday, she wrote: “Tina Maze, I challenge you to a slalom battle of the ages. Lets dance ;)”

• Heather McPhie of the United States and Alex Bilodeau of Canada won freestyle World Cup moguls events at Are, Sweden.

DOGSLED RACING

IDITAROD: A dog in the Iditarod was found dead in the snow in the coastal Alaskan town of Unalakleet, where it was waiting to be flown back to Anchorage.

The 5-year-old dog from rookie musher Paige Drobny’s team was being cared for in an area set up for dogs dropped from the race.

SOCCER

FINED: Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema was fined $23,400 and had his driver’s license revoked for eight months for reckless driving.

Benzema was caught driving 134 mph in a 62 mph zone in Madrid on Feb. 3.
