AUGUSTA — Maine lawmakers have killed proposals calling for mandatory motorcycle helmets and banning the use of cellphones by most motor vehicle drivers.

The Senate went along with the House on Wednesday in voting to kill a bill requiring all motorcyclists to wear helmets in Maine. Current Maine law requires motorcyclists under 18 years old to wear a helmet when driving or riding as a passenger.

The House also rejected a bill that would outlaw the use of hand-held mobile phones by drivers.
