Poland uses last-inning comeback to beat Gray-New Gloucester, 9-8

Poland came from behind in the last inning to beat Gray-New Gloucester 9-8 in a season-opening baseball game for both teams at Poland on Monday.

The Knights (1-0) tied the game 8-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Lucas Johnson walked, stole second and scored when Tanner Marston’s infield single was thrown away. Pinch-runner Matt Rabasco scored the winning run a batter later when the Patriots (0-1) committed their second error of the inning.

• Tyler Hill doubled in two runs and scored a third as Fryeburg (1-0) broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the second in a 8-1 win against Wells (0-1) at Fryeburg.

Hill finished with three hits, three runs and three RBI.

COLLEGES

SOFTBALL: Bates and UMaine-Farmington split a doubleheader at Lewiston.

Bates (6-10) took advantage of seven UMF errors to win the opener 7-3 as Mary Lewis had three hits and scored three times.

The Beavers (9-8) came back to win the second game 8-5 as Amy Jones hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the seventh. Shelby Bryan added a two-run single during a four-run eighth inning.

• Southern Maine CC (6-13) managed only seven hits in two games, getting swept by Community College of Rhode Island in a pair of games halted after five innings at Providence, R.I., 10-0 and 12-0.

For SMCC, Antonetta Brown had two hits in the opener, and Lindsey Howell had two in the nightcap.

BASEBALL: St. Joseph’s swept Albertus Magnus at West Haven, Conn., winning both games 3-1.

In the first game, Joe Gruntkosky allowed one unearned run off six hits while striking out 11 in a complete-game win. The Monks (20-9, 10-2 GNAC) won the second behind Nick Whittaker, who also earned a complete-game victory, giving up two hits and striking out 10.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: The Phoenix Mercury took former Baylor star Brittney Griner with the top pick in the WNBA draft.

The two-time AP Player of the Year finished as the second all-time scorer in women’s NCAA history with 3,283 points. She is the top shot-blocker, shattering both the men’s and women’s college marks with 748.

Meanwhile, Chicago took former Delaware star Elena Delle Donne with the No. 2 pick. The 6-foot-5 forward was second in the nation in scoring (26.0) and averaged 8.5 rebounds. She finished her career at Delaware with 3,039 career points — fifth all time in NCAA history.

TENNIS

MONTE CARLO MASTERS: Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain upset Gilles Simon 6-3, 7-6 (6) in the first round at Monaco.

In other first-round matches, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, Nikolay Davydenko of Russia and Frenchmen Benoit Paire and Edouard Roger-Vasselin all won in straight sets.

FRENCH OPEN: Prize money at the tournament will rise for both singles champions and players who lose in some of the early rounds.

Roland Garros organizers said the overall total for the tournament will go from $24.6 million to $28.7 million, with the winners receiving $1.96 million compared to $1.64 million in 2012.
