William S. Cohen, the former U.S. secretary of state and U.S. senator, will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame with nine others on May 5 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Cohen, a Bangor native, was nominated for the Hall of Fame last fall, but his name wasn’t on the original list of inductees released to the press because Hall of Fame officials wanted to contact Cohen first, said Hall President Dick Whitmore.

“When you’re dealing with someone at that level, you have to go through his people,” said Whitmore.

“We kept working on it. They got back to us in January and I was very pleased to learn that Bill Cohen will be at the Hall of Fame banquet. He adjusted his schedule,” he said.

Cohen is chairman and chief executive officer of The Cohen Group of Washington, D.C. The company provides global business and consulting services.

Cohen was an outstanding basketball player at Bangor High and Bowdoin College. In 1958, he was named to the Bangor Daily News all-state first team. Cohen was a three-year starter at Bowdoin and co-captain his senior year.

He averaged a career best 16.2 points a game as a senior and was named to the All-State Series team (Bowdoin, Bates, Colby and Maine).

Joining Cohen as inductees will be Dr. Doug Brown, Ricky Craven, Paula Doughty, Gary Fifield, Skip Robinson, Bob Russo, Paul Vachon, Manch Wheeler and John Wolfgram.

There will be a social hour starting at 11 a.m., followed by the banquet.

Five high school students will be scholarship recipients.

They are Georgia Bolduc, Waterville; Caitlin Bucksbaum, Falmouth; Adrienne Carmack, John Bapst; Madeline Wiegman. Leavitt and Evan Worster, Forest Hills.
