GORHAM – Gorham High Athletic Director Tim Spear said Wednesday that Mark Karter is the Rams’ new head boys’ basketball coach, pending school committee approval May 8.

Karter said he couldn’t comment until he is approved.

Karter spent the last 21 seasons as head coach at Westbrook High. Karter will replace Ryan Chicoine, who resigned shortly after the season ended. Chicoine coached three seasons.

“We’re fortunate to have him,” said Spear. “Mark will bring stability and leadership to our program. We’re looking for Mark to continue to do what he has done and run a successful program.”

Karter won three Western Class A titles at Westbrook. He has 372 career wins at Westbrook and Mountain Valley. Westbrook finished with a 13-6 record in 2012-13. The Blue Blazes were seeded fifth for the tournament and lost to No. 4 Portland in the quarterfinals.

Gorham had a 7-12 record last season. The Rams made the tournament in the 11th and final qualifying spot. They lost to No. 6 Scarborough in a preliminary- round game.

Karter is a teacher at Westbrook Junior High.
