SIDNEY — A local woman fled after hitting two men on bicycles with her car on Middle Road, police said.

Amy L. Violette, 37, of Sidney, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident that caused injury, said Capt. Daniel Davies of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office.

Samuel Tannenbaum, 27, and Donald Robbins, 71, both of Sidney, were treated by rescuers for minor injuries at the scene, Davies said.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. as Tannenbaum and Robbins completed a 30-mile bicycle ride. The men were moments away from pulling into a driveway near 2300 Middle Road to end the trip when Violette, who was driving north in her 2004 Nissan Maxima, hit the bicycles from behind, Davies said. The impact knocked both men to the ground and ripped off the passenger’s side mirror and a cover off the car’s bumper.

Violette continued north on Middle Road without stopping, Davies said.

Kennebec County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Day, who investigated the crash, drove to Annie’s Variety a couple of miles north of the crash to see whether surveillance cameras had captured any images of the car, Davies said. Day noticed marks in the road indicating a high-speed turn onto Dinsmore Road. Day went to an apartment complex on the road and found the car, Davies said.

Day was inspecting the damage to the car when Violette came out of an apartment. Violette, when asked about the damage, said she did not know about the bicycle accident.

“She said someone had hit her car at the Walmart in Augusta,” Davies said.
