PORTLAND — More than 160 locations around Maine are taking unwanted and expired prescription drugs until 2 p.m. today for the sixth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

Residents can turn over prescription drugs at police and fire stations, drug stores, town halls and other locations across Maine in an effort to have the drugs properly disposed of instead of being flushed down toilets or sent to landfills.

In the previous five drug take-back days, more than 2 million pounds of prescription drugs have been turned in nationwide.

The initiative is put on each year by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

A list of Maine drop-off locations is located on the Department of Justice website (http://1.usa.gov/11czC4P).
