A Maine man has died in a gyrocopter crash in Florida.
Fifty-eight-year-old Scott Adair of Scarborough was killed shortly before 8 a.m. Monday at Valkaria Airport in Malabar. Adair had a second home in Florida.
Adair was piloting a single-seat gyrocopter when it went down and crashed into an unmanned airplane on airport property. A gyrocopter is a small aircraft with a rotor like a helicopter and a propeller like an airplane.
WMTW-TV reports that Adair was an experienced paraglider pilot, but that this was his first solo flight in a gyrocopter.
The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office said the gyrocopter crashed from about 100 feet in the air.
The aircraft crashed into a parked plane before it hit the ground on the north side of the airport. No one was in the second aircraft, according to the Florida Today newspaper.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating.
Adair is survived by his wife and two children.
