PORTLAND — U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree is wrapping up a trip to Turkey where she met with the country’s president and other high-ranking officials.

The Maine Democrat is part of an eight-member congressional delegation that arrived in Turkey on Sunday. The group will be in the country through Tuesday with stops in Ankara and Istanbul.

Pingree says it’s particularly important for the U.S. to maintain positive relations with Turkey because of the deteriorating civil war in neighboring Syria.

She met with Turkish President Abdullah Gul on Monday and had meetings scheduled with members of Parliament, cabinet ministers, business leaders and leaders from the Turkey’s minority communities.

Pingree says the trip was paid for by the Turkish government.
