FALMOUTH – An eighth-grader at Falmouth Middle School has been named one of the 50 finalists nationwide who may soon see their artwork on Google’s popular search website.
Joseph Han, 14, was named Maine’s winner of the annual “Doodle 4 Google” contest during a school assembly Wednesday morning. More than 130,000 entries were submitted nationwide, according to Google.

Google doodles feature various styles of original artwork in which the company’s name is spelled out as part of the scene.
Han’s doodle is a colorful painting of a boy sitting on the bank of a river with the Google name subtly spelled out by trees and a footbridge.
The 50 winning doodles will be displayed in the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Along with the winners from the other 49 states, Han has been invited to an awards ceremony at Google’s headquarters in New York on May 22.
The national winner, who will be named at the ceremony, will have his or her doodle displayed on the Google home page on May 23. The winning student will receive a $30,000 college scholarship and a $50,000 technology grant for his or her school.
Google is asking people to vote for their favorite doodles from the 50 state winners to help select five national finalists. Voting will be open until May 10 at: https://www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html.
