PORTLAND — Ondrej Palat scored his second goal of the game with 16.2 seconds left in overtime as the Syracuse Crunch eliminated the Portland Pirates from the first round of the AHL playoffs with a 4-3 win at the Cumberland County Civic Center Thursday night.
Palat lifted in a rebound from the slot as the Crunch swept the best-of-five series.
The Crunch rallied from a two-goal deficit for the second time in the series to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
The Pirates took a 3-1 lead 10 minutes into the third period on goals by Alexandre Bolduc and Nick Johnson.
Veteran Mike Angelides started the Syracuse rally by scoring a goal with 6:01 left, and Pallat forged a 3-3 tie when he scored with 1:12 left after goalie Cedric Desjardins was pulled for an extra skater.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead during the first period on Andy Miele’s first playoff goal. Defenseman Radko Gudas tied the score six minutes into the second period by putting in a blast from center point.
Syracuse, with a lineup that included 12 players who helped the Norfolk Admirals capture the Calder Cup last season, held a 45-18 edge in shots.
