The Greely high baseball program is one that’s usually in contention despite graduation losses.

The Rangers have a strong tradition which makes players want to be part of it. It also helps to have stability in coaches.

Head coach Derek Soule has built a strong program. One of his assistants is Bob Anthoine, who was Soule’s coach at Greely. Anthoine also had a strong program with the Rangers. Myles Hunt, another ex-Ranger, is the pitching coach.

After beating Falmouth 5-1 on Friday in a battle of unbeatens, Soule pointed to the fact that the team has only two starters from last season. Greely has seven starters who weren’t starters last season.

In other programs, that might elicit a “Wow,” but at Greely it’s business as usual.

Last year’s team was expected to go all the way, but was upset in the regionals.

This year’s team may achieve what last year’s team couldn’t — a state title.

But It’s still early and a lot can happen.

THE ONLY two remaining unbeaten teams in SMAA girls’ tennis meet Monday afternoon at Deering Oaks when Scarborough (6-0) visits Portland (5-0).

The Red Storm are a combined 27-3 and have yet to lose more than one point in a match. They knocked Windham from the ranks of the unbeaten Friday with a 4-1 victory in Windham.

The Bulldogs are 24-1 and coming off a 4-1 victory over Cheverus Friday.

Both teams are particularly adept at doubles, where they have yet to lose a match.

“That’ll be a good one,” said Portland coach Bonnie Moran. “They’ll probably be the toughest team we face.”
