Army Pfc. Jared M. Gilbert has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is the son of Michael Gilbert of Scarborough, and grandson of William Gilbert of Topsham and is a 2012 graduate of Scarborough High School.

Army Reserve Pvt. Joshua Hart has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He is a 2008 graduate of Mount Ararat High School, Topsham.

Air Force Senior Airman Joseph Burns, a son of Kevin and Melody Burns of Portland, is a military working dog handler stationed at Aviano Air Base, Italy. Burns joined the military after graduating from Deering High School in 2006.

Marine Corps Pvt. Niko A. Potter, son of Danielle Iacono of Lewiston and James Iacono, of Saco, has graduated from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S. C. Potter is a 2012 graduate of Lewiston High School.

Mary Hawkes, director of Northern Penobscot Technical Region III in Lincoln, recently received the Patriotic Employer Award in recognition of her support of employee Nathan Anaya, a public safety instructor at Region III and the equal employment non-commissioned officer in charge at the Maine Air National Guard, 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor.

The award was presented to Hawkes by the Maine Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense agency, which publicly recognizes individuals who provide support and cooperation to their employees in the service.
