Body believed to be man who has been missing

Officials say a body found in the Androscoggin River is believed to be that of an Auburn man who had been missing for a month.

Police say 46-year-old Dan Doherty went missing the night of April 4, leaving his car, jacket and personal items near a bridge crossing the river.

Auburn Deputy Police Chief Jason Moen tells the Sun Journal of Lewiston the body has been taken to the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification. The cause of death has not been determined.

A friend told the newspaper that Doherty was distraught when he called her the night he disappeared.

ACLU gives civil liberties award to UMaine professor

The American Civil Liberties Union of Maine has awarded its annual Justice Louis Scolnik Award to a longtime University of Maine School of Law professor for his years of advocacy for civil liberties.

Orlando Delogu was honored during an awards dinner in Freeport on Thursday. Delogu was a founding member and board president of the Maine Civil Liberties Union, overseeing its growth during its infancy from 1967 to 1973.

The Justice Louis Scolnik Award was established in 1989 to honor members of the legal community for their commitment to protecting civil liberties. It’s named for former Maine Supreme Court Justice Louis Scolnik, who was a co-founder and the first president of the Maine Civil Liberties Union, which is now the ACLU of Maine.

Assault sends man to hospital; assailants known

Portland police are investigating an assault that sent one man to Maine Medical Center with unknown injuries.

Lt. Gary Hutcheson said the assault took place in the vicinity of 98 India St. around 8 p.m. Sunday.
Hutcheson said police would not be releasing a description of the suspects because the assailants are known to police.

He said the case has been turned over to the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. No other details were available Sunday night.

High School freshman wins Moxie drawing contest

A high school freshman has won this year’s Moxie Festival logo contest for her drawing based on the theme, “Moxie: A Maine Tradition.”

Lisbon High School student Kristen Butler received a $100 check and a 2013 Moxie Festival T-shirt featuring her winning entry.

Her logo shows a deer with its antlers forming the word “Moxie” and Maine-themed ornaments – a lighthouse, a lobster, a pine tree, a moose and a can of Moxie – dangling from the antlers.

This year’s festival takes place from July 12-14 in Lisbon. The annual event started in 1982 to pay homage to the unusual beverage that was concocted by a Mainer in the 1870s. Moxie is now Maine’s official soft drink.
