BRUNSWICK — A non-profit organization based in Freeport, which is committed to helping at risk youth in Maine, has acquired two buildings at the former U.S. Navy base in Brunswick.
Steve Levesque, Executive Director for the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, announced in a press release that Seeds of Independence paid $510,000 for the property at Brunswick Landing – formerly known as the Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Levesque said that Thomas B. Wright, the organization’s Executive Director, plans to use the 10,000 square foot Building 24 as the center of operations for the Seeds of Independence program.
Seeds of Independence is a mentor and volunteer-baed organization that tries to help at risk youth reach their full potential. Wright works with teens in the Brunswick, Bath, Topsham and Freeport school systems.
Some of the building space will be shared with drug counselors, social service agencies, and mentoring groups.
The second building acquired by Seeds –the former Navy vet clinic – will be leased to a food services provider.
