CLEVELAND — Police say three Cleveland women held captive before their escape this week had ventured outside just twice in 10 years, and even then were forced to wear disguises to avoid calling attention to themselves.
In a news conference announcing charges against their alleged captor, Ariel Castro, Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said the women went outside just twice – wearing disguises and only walking far enough to reach the nearby garage.

Tomba also said the women were held in separate rooms inside Castro’s home.
Castro’s son has said he seldom visited his father’s house. But on a recent visit, the elder Castro refused to let him in. Anthony Castro told London’s Daily Mail newspaper his father kept various parts of the house locked up, including the attic, basement and garage.
