KENNEBUNK – There’s not much that surprises Kennebunk Coach Dan Seavey when it comes to Tyler Elkington.

But how about a one-handed catch and pass completed while being tangled up by a defender in front of the opposition net leading directly to a goal?

“That play was surprising just because of what happened, but Tyler’s so athletic I wasn’t surprised,” said Seavey after the impressive play that was a highlight in Kennebunk’s 11-4 win over Greely in a schoolboy lacrosse game Friday night. “I kind of said ‘wow’ but, you know, I wasn’t surprised it happened to be honest with you.”

The assist on the goal by Jacob Boothby was part of a five-goal and two-assist performance by Elkington that powered the undefeated Rams (8-0) to victory. It also continued an impressive, out-of-nowhere campaign for the junior.

Last year Elkington rarely played and finished his sophomore campaign with only four goals. He easily eclipsed that total by netting six in a season-opening win over Noble. His production against the Rangers (5-2) brought his season total to 26 goals to go along with 33 assists.

“The coaches gave me an opportunity to play this year and I’ve kind of made the best of it,” understated Elkington.

Elkington was at his best in the second half. Josh Hussey broke a 3-3 halftime tie just over a minute into the third quarter. Less than a minute later Elkington struck to make it 5-3 before setting up Boothby for his second of the game in highlight-reel fashion to up the count to 6-3.

“We came into halftime and we were all really upset because we thought we could have been up by four or five goals easy,” said Elkington. “We weren’t playing well and we weren’t playing with enthusiasm and aggressiveness. We came out in the second half a lot more aggressive, scored goals right off the bat and got into a groove.”

The three-goal explosion clearly left Greely, losers of two in a row after opening the season with five straight wins, on its heels.

“We started missing our defensive assignments and obviously the momentum started going in their direction and sometimes that’s a little difficult to slow down,” said Greely Coach Mike Storey.

Brendan Trelegan salvaged something for the Rangers from the period when he scored his second of the game with less than two minutes remaining to make it 6-4.

That was as close as Greely would get as Elkington greeted the fourth with a pair of near identical goals. Both times he held the ball behind the net before charging to the front, virtually untouched, and beating the goaltender.

Bryce Fraser scored a pair while Patrick Gassman had the other to complete the Rams scoring.

Calvin Stroud and Mitchell Mullin rounded out the Greely scoring.
