BRUNSWICK — Bicycle rides will be taking place in Maine and across the country as a silent protest against traffic fatalities involving bicyclists. More than 600 bicyclists are killed each year while riding.
Maine’s Ride of Silence this Wednesday evening is free and open to all cyclists. The only requirements are that riders remain silent, travel no faster than a 12-mph pace and wear a helmet. Lights and a black armband are also recommended.
The Brunswick-Topsham Ride of Silence will be about 10 miles.
The first Ride of Silence took place 10 years ago in Texas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and killed.
