WAYNE — A Leeds teen was injured Sunday in a spectacular crash on Route 219 that sent her sport utility vehicle hurtling end-over-end.
The 17-year-old girl was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with what were believed to be non life-threatening injuries, said Sgt. Scott Taylor of the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office. He said the teen was “mostly shaken up” and complained of pain in her chest and shoulders.

“She is very fortunate to be alive,” Taylor said.
The crash occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m. as the teen was driving her 2003 Hyundai Sante Fe east on Route 219. The teen was alone in the SUV.
“She appeared to be distracted and went off the right side of the road for several hundred feet,” Taylor said.
The Sante Fe came back onto the road over a steep ditch and rolled twice, end-over-end, before coming to rest on its roof at the intersection with Strickland Ferry Road.
“It caved the roof down on top of her,” Taylor said. “They had to break the glass to slide her out.”
Taylor said the investigation had not yet determined what distracted the girl.
The Sante Fe was destroyed, Taylor said.
“She was wearing a seat belt,” he said. “That helped keep her in.”
Route 219 was closed briefly as responders from Wayne Fire Department and Winthrop Rescue assisted the girl.
