PORTLAND – After an eight-day layoff, the unbeaten Waynflete girls’ lacrosse team was ready to play Tuesday.

It showed.

The Flyers looked extremely sharp while rolling to a 16-3 victory against Falmouth at Fore River Field.

“We had a week of practice and it was so productive because we got to work on a lot of things we used today, but I think we were ready for another game,” said Martha Veroneau, who had four goals and an assist. “That’s why we came out with so much intensity.”

It was Waynflete’s second win over the Yachtsmen. The first victory was 10-8 on May 3 at Falmouth.

“We were hoping for a much closer game, maybe even a win,” Falmouth Coach Robin Haley said. “Waynflete is very good, highly skilled, and we knew that coming in. We just weren’t able to execute, but at the same time my girls kept hanging in there.”

If the Flyers, the defending Class B champions, have a weakness, it wasn’t visible.

“Anybody on our offense and defense is capable of stepping it up in any game,” Veroneau said. “If somebody is having an off day, then another player will step it up. We have seven scorers on the offensive end, which not a lot of teams have.”

“Every single player brings a different thing to the game that nobody else has,” said Sadie Cole, who had three goals and three assists. “Everybody brings something different that really makes this team successful.”

Waynflete (9-0) held a 31-12 edge in shots, 11-10 in draw controls and 16-12 in ground balls.

Isabel Agnew had three goals and an assist for the Flyers. Leigh Fernandez and Ella Millard each had two goals and an assist. Sofia Canning had a goal and Cat Johnson an assist.

For Falmouth (6-4), Sabrina Smithwick scored twice and Angela Mallis had a goal. Alex Bernier added three assists.

The Flyers, who are seeking their sixth consecutive regional title, began a string of four games in eight days.

The Flyers, the top-ranked team in the Western Class B Heal point standings, will be home Wednesday against Yarmouth before ending the regular season on the road next week with back-to-back games against powerful Cheverus and Greely.

Falmouth, ranked fourth in Western Class B, will end the regular season next week on the road against Class B powers Cape Elizabeth and North Yarmouth Academy.

“Hopefully we’ll bounce back,” Haley said.

“We’ll prepare for those two games and hope we’ll hang in there for the playoffs.
