TOPSHAM – A 14-year-old Topsham girl was located unharmed early Sunday morning, hours after she disappeared into the heavy woods behind her Sunward Lane home, police said.

Topsham police Sgt. Robert Ramsay said the girl, who has the mental capacity of an 8-year-old, was looking for frogs in her backyard when she disappeared shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday. Police did a K-9 search of the area before calling in game wardens for assistance.

The girl was located unharmed sometime after midnight and was able to go home to her family after being checked out by emergency responders, Ramsay said.

“She was in the woods for quite a length of time. It was cold and rainy,” Ramsay said.

Residents of the area were notified the girl was missing through the town’s reverse 911 system.
