AUGUSTA – The University of Maine at Augusta is celebrating the launch of its new aviation program.

The university and Maine Instrument Flight are holding an open house at the flight school’s Augusta State Airport hangar on Friday to celebrate the new bachelor of science in aviation program.

Developed in partnership with Maine Instrument Flight, the program enables students to earn a degree and become an FAA-certified commercial pilot at the same time. The program is the first of its kind in Maine and is expected to help meet growing national demand for pilots.

More than 150 people are expected at Friday’s open house, which will feature remarks from university officials, the president of Maine Instrument Flight, a state senator and others. There’ll also be drawings for free flights for prospective students.
