Two South Portland men face charges after break-in

Authorities say a homeowner startled two thieves when he returned home and found them piling items from his house at the door.

York County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 30-year-old Ahmed Farah and 30-year-old Muse Keyse, both of South Portland, on Wednesday. Authorities say when the homeowner came home and found them inside his residence, the two men fled in a pickup truck. They were arrested in Waterboro.

Authorities said Keyes is also facing a warrant charging him with failure to appear in court on a charge of presenting false identification to a law enforcement officer.

Voters in SAD 6 towns OK $44.6 million school budget

Voters in the five towns that belong to School Administrative District 6 have approved a $44.6 million school budget. 

Buxton, Standish, Limington, Hollis and Frye Island also voted to continue the budget validation referendum process for an additional three years. 

Hollis voters approved the education budget by a vote of 296 to 149 but Frye Island rejected the budget by a vote of 9-1. Results from the two towns were not available Tuesday.

Police investigate after dog shot 80-100 times with BBs

Police in Waldoboro are investigating an animal cruelty case involving a young dog that they say was shot 80 to 100 times with a BB gun.

Officials said a year-old black Lab was taken to Lincoln County Animal to be spayed when workers noticed the BB pellets.

WLBZ-TV reported that X-rays showed that the dog was shot in the face, stomach and back.

It’s unclear who previously owned the dog before it was recently adopted. For now, a veterinarian does not plan to remove the pellets.

Former president marks 89th birthday with family

Former President George H.W. Bush showed off his love for colorful, outlandish footwear by donning Superman socks to celebrate his 89th birthday.

Bush spent Wednesday with his family at their summer home in Kennebunkport. A birthday photo released by his office in Houston shows a smiling Bush on a golf cart, wearing red and blue socks with the DC Entertainment comic hero logo — complete with tiny capes on the back.

The 41st president has in past years marked his birthday with stunts such as skydiving. But Bush has had medical issues this year, and spent nearly two months in a Houston hospital with a bronchitis-related cough before being discharged in January.

Bush’s wife, Barbara, turned 88 on June 8.

Transgender student wants her bias lawsuit reinstated

Lawyers for a transgender student and a school that required the fifth-grader to use a staff bathroom instead of the girls’ restroom differ over whether the girl’s rights were violated.

The Maine supreme court heard arguments Wednesday in an appeal by Nicole Maines and her family that seeks to have her discrimination lawsuit reinstated.

A Superior Court judge previously ruled that the Orono school district acted within its discretion by requiring her to use a staff bathroom after there was a complaint.

The student is now 15 and attending a high school in southern Maine.

NewPage idling 120 workers for one week to save money

NewPage paper company is giving 120 maintenance workers at its western Maine mill one-week furloughs in a move to save money.

Spokesman Anthony Lyons said the workers will be idle June 17-24.

The temporary layoffs come four months after NewPage cut 5 percent of its work force nationwide, resulting in nearly 50 workers at the Rumford mill losing their jobs. The mill employs about 850 people.

Ron Hemingway, president of the Local 900 United Steelworkers, told the Sun Journal that the layoffs involve hourly workers who are union members, not salaried employees.

NewPage is based in Ohio and also owns paper mills in Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

MADAWASKA

Local woman, 83, killed in crash with logging truck

Authorities say an 83-year-old Madawaska woman has died after her car was struck by a loaded logging truck.

Police Chief Carroll Theriault said Rella Cyr was turning into a church parking lot at about 2:30 p.m. Monday when the truck behind her failed to stop and hit her broadside.

Police told WABI-TV that Cyr was taken to a hospital in Edmundston, New Brunswick, where she died.

The crash is under investigation.
