Dale Shaw not only builds race cars, but he drives the cars he makes down Victory Lane, too.

Shaw, 49, is entering his seventh season as crew chief on his son D.J.’s racing team, but he’s also back behind the wheel.

A champion on the old NASCAR Busch North Series who now builds cars for other drivers in his shop in Center Conway, N.H., he has come out of retirement to post two wins in the Pro Late Model Division at Oxford Plains Speedway.

“My son’s been racing and I sort of retired,” he said. “I’ve come back out of retirement for a year at least to see what happens.”

Last fall, Shaw got bit by the racing bug again when he drove an open-wheeled, eight-cylinder modified in a PASS North race for the first time.

“I started two races at the end of the season and I won one of them so I got hooked again,” he said. “I don’t know what gets into me. I think I can quit and I have to come back.”

This season Shaw intends to run for points while driving in the top racing division at OPS on Friday nights.

“I’m sort of concentrating on my son’s racing as much as I can,” he said. “Oxford affords me the opportunity to race on a different day.”

Shaw is driving a car he originally built as a Super Late Model in 2006.

“It’s kind of funny. It was the car I drove when I won my last PASS race,” he said. “I had only raced it five times, and the guy I sold it to only raced it five times. It sat on jack stands in his garage and I bought it back over the winter.”

PASS NORTH has added a June 23 race for its Super Late Models at Oxford Plains Speedway after rain washed out two of the regional racing tour’s events.

“We thought about where we could make one of (the races) up and we just decided to give the Super Late Model teams another chance to run at Oxford before the 250,” PASS North president Tom Mayberry said, who bought the speedway last year.

The 40th running of the TD Bank 250 is scheduled July 21 at the three-eighths mile oval.

Rain forced the cancellation of the 150-lap LSM races scheduled for May 25 at White Mountain Motorsports Park at North Woodstock, NH., and last weekend at Speedway 660 in Geary, New Brunswick.

The June 23 racing program also will include races in PASS North’s opened-wheeled Mods Division and in the speedway’s Strictly Sports, Outlaw Sportsman and Mini-Stocks divisions.

The top four racing divisions at OPS also will run June 21 as scheduled.

JOEY DOIRON, PASS North’s Super Late Model division points leader, has been keeping busy the past several weeks by working in the pits for his friend, Evan Beaulieu, a young driver from Durham who has moved up from Legends cars to race in the Pro Series division at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough.

“We raced go-karts as kids and I’ve known him forever,” Doiron said.

Doiron, who is from Berwick, hasn’t driven a race car since May 18, when he posted his third second-place finish in as many starts in a PASS North race at Autodrome Chaudiere at Vallee-Jonction, Quebec.

This season, Doiron, who has run for points in the past at the Scarborough racetrack, is concentrating on the regional tour.

“After the start we’ve had, we want to stay focused and not get distracted,” he said. “We’ve just got to stay prepared.”

WISCASSET SPEEDWAY will host its longest race to date on Saturday night — a 100-lap Enduro for six-and eight-cylinder clunkers.

“It’s basically for stock cars, kick out the glass and chain the doors,” said track spokesman Ken Minott. “It’s for the guys and girls who usually don’t get a chance to run on the track.”

The race will last no more than one hour, and the win could go to the last car left on the track.

Races in the speedway’s Pro Stock, Super Stock, New England 4-cylinder Pro Stock l and Thunder 4 divisions also are scheduled.
