PORTLAND — A 23-year-old man who was soliciting change from passersby on State Street now faces an assault charge after he allegedly grabbed a wad of bills out of another man’s hand.

Said Abdullahi, who lists no home address, asked a man at the corner of State and Pine streets for spare change at about 8 p.m. Wednesday, police said. When the man pulled some money from his pocket and started to peel off a $1 bill, Abdullahi allegedly grabbed all the money – $39.

Rather than confront Abdullahi, the alleged victim followed him while calling police and was able to direct an officer to make the arrest a short distance away on Congress Street, police said.

Abdullahi was originally charged with robbery but the charge was changed by prosecutors to assault, police said.
