SOUTH BERWICK — A teenager, who was attempting to pass his driver’s license test Wednesday morning, probably won’t be getting his license on this try.

South Berwick Police Chief Dana Lajoie said the 16-year-old driver was crossing Route 236 at its intersection with Academy Street around 11:20 a.m. when his car was struck on the passenger side by a sport-utility vehicle that was heading south.

The teen driver likely failed to yield, Lajoie said.

Michael LaFrance, 57, of Old Orchard Beach, the Department of Motor Vehicle examiner who was giving the teen a road test, had to be extracted from the car.

LaFrance and the boy were transported to York Hospital after complaining of pain, but their injuries were not considered to be serious. The driver of the Ford Explorer, 22-year-old Tyler Viera of Rollingsford, N.H., was not injured.

Lajoie said the crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed against the juvenile, but Lajoie said it is unlikely that the teen driver passed his test.
