INGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Binghamton Mets used fast starts in both games Saturday to sweep a doubleheader from the Portland Sea Dogs for the second time in three days, 5-2 and 6-0.

Binghamton got eight of its 11 runs in the first inning and was never seriously threatened in either contest.

The Mets built their lead back to 10½ games in the Eastern League’s Eastern Division while dropping the Sea Dogs from second to third place.

The first three Mets singled and five of the first seven had hits to produce all five of Binghamton’s runs in the first game. Binghamton started the second game with back-to-back singles and scored three times in the inning.

Wilfredo Tovar capped the Game 1 outburst with a three-run double. The Mets got the inning started with an infield single and back-to-back bloop hits.

Travis Taijeron completed the fast start in the second game with a broken-bat, two-run single to left field for a 3-0 lead.

The biggest positive for the Sea Dogs on an otherwise discouraging night may have been that both starting pitchers bounced back to reduce the impact on an already fatigued pitching staff. Terry Doyle (0-2) threw a complete game in the opener, giving up just two hits after the first inning. Jeremy Kehrt (0-3) held the Mets hitless in the second, fourth and fifth innings, leaving just one inning for the exhausted bullpen.

“They each had a rough first inning, but they competed and they hung in there,” Sea Dogs Manager Kevin Boles said. “They’re aware of what’s expected. They were both able to settle in and keep their wits about them.”

With a doubleheader Thursday and a 15-inning game Friday, the teams played 43 innings in three days.

The Sea Dogs managed just seven hits Saturday.

Lefty Darin Gorski (3-0) combined with Jeff Walters on a three-hitter in the opener. Walters worked the seventh for his league-high 24th save.

Jenrry Mejia, on a rehab appearance from the major league club, and Hamilton Bennett teamed for a four-hit shutout in the second game.

Sea Dogs catcher Christian Vazquez went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI in Game 1.

The Sea Dogs made a series of transactions before Saturday’s doubleheader.

After becoming the second position player in Sea Dogs history to record a pitching win with two scoreless innings Friday night, Ryan Dent was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. Third baseman Garin Cecchini and pitcher Anthony Ranaudo reported to New York for Sunday’s Futures All-Star game.

The Sea Dogs added pitcher Eric Niesen from Pawtucket, catcher Leonel Escobar and pitcher Kyle Striz from Class A Salem, and outfielder Kevin Heller from Class A Greenville.

“It’s all hands on deck at this point,” Boles said. “We brought guys in from a few different levels. They’re going to get opportunities.”
