PORTLAND — Dozens of runners were treated for heat exhaustion Sunday, five hospitalized, at the Shipyard Old Port half marathon.

None of the five hospitalized runners had life-threatening issues.

The temperature is Portland was in the low 80s with 65 percent humidity.

Portland’s fire chief Jerome LaMoria said extra department medical personnel were called to the finish line at the Ocean Gate Terminal to care for runners who became overheated in the 13-mile race.

Firefighters opened up hoses so runners could cool themselves down. Several runners said they saw others who had collapsed along the route. Close to 3,000 ran in the race.
