Celebration honors staff for service to education

The Wells-Ogunquit School Committee recently recognized five retiring staff members and three current staffers who have served in the district for 20 years during the annual Celebration of Service to Education at Wells Junior High School.

Retirees included Pamela Parrott (27 years of service), Bridget Scontras (26 years), Donna Weigel (29 years), Joan McGovern (20 years) and Catherine Madden (14 years).

Those recognized for 20 years of service to the district included Cathy Cornish, Cheryl Turner and Nancy Cotty.

Retiring School Committee Chair Russell Fox was also recognized for his many years of service.

Interim community school district Superintendent William Richards presided over the event and introduced those being honored.

PORTLAND

Walks help Make-A-Wish fulfill children’s dreams

Make-A-Wish Maine has raised more than $90,000 through its recently held Walk for Wishes events, held in seven locations across the state, including Portland, Saco, Rockland, Bangor, Dennysville, Augusta and Auburn.

The funds will allow the Make-A-Wish Maine chapter to fund 15 more wishes, benefiting children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Job skills program for teens gets $5,000 from foundation

People’s United Community Foundation has awarded $5,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine.

The grant will support the Junior Staff Program, which teaches teens basic job skills and provides work experience at the clubs.

A total of 160 teens, ages 13 to 18, will participate in financial education and career planning workshops and will be required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of apprenticeship.

In addition, each member will receive a $100 stipend upon completion.

Bank’s donation helps free clinic provide care

The Biddeford Free Clinic recently received a $2,500 donation from a longtime supporter, Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution, to help provide outpatient medical care and non-narcotic prescription medication to low-income adults and children without insurance.

BUXTON

Ink cartridges, cellphones can boost scholarship fund

The Buxton Garden Club is collecting used inkjet cartridges and cellphones to benefit the Bonny Eagle High School Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors.

Collection boxes have been set up to receive those items at the Buxton Recycling Center, Buxton Town Hall, West Buxton Library, Salmon Falls Library, Hollis Town Hall and Hollis Center Library.

Signing up for talent show supports anti-bullying effort

Crossroads Youth Center is accepting applications to participate in the upcoming Green Carpet Talent Show at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at Thornton Academy’s Garland Auditorium.

The registration fee is $25 per act and one act will win the grand prize of $500.

Funds raised will benefit the Unite Against Bullying ME Walk to be held Oct. 6 on the Eastern Trail.

SOUTH PORTLAND

Foundation grant supports trade, technical scholarships

Southern Maine Community College has received a $10,000 grant from The Grainger Foundation to support the growth in the college’s trade and technical programs and to provide scholarships for students.

Since 2009, the foundation has donated a total of $48,000 to the college.
