CUMBERLAND — Brief, torrential rainfall resulted in multiple minor crashes on Interstate 295 north of Portland on Thursday afternoon.

State Trooper Larry Rose said a “microburst” that took place just before 4 p.m. produced rain so heavy that it significantly reduced driver visiblity.

Three crashes – fender benders – took place in the southbound lane on the Falmouth-Cumberland town line, causing traffic to back up for about five miles to Yarmouth.

Around the same time, an additional three crashes took place in the northbound lane of the Interstate. The crashes caused traffic delays in both directions.

No serious injuries were reported, but traffic did not start moving again until around 5:45 p.m., Rose said.
