SOUTH PORTLAND — Officials have still not released the name of the man who apparently drowned in the Fore River Friday night.

The man and his girlfriend were swimming off a point of land underneath the South Portland side of the Casco Bay Bridge around 5:30 p.m. Friday. After the man asked other swimmers to help his girlfriend reach shore, he started to float away in a strong current, witnesses said.

Portland’s fireboat and a Coast Guard vessel searched for the man and he was recovered by the fireboat crew about a half-hour later. Portland officials said the fireboat crew performed CPR on the man and he was taken to Maine Medical Center by ambulance, but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

South Portland fire officials had been expected to release the man’s identity Saturday, but they said the identification would have to come from the state Medical Examiner’s Office. A call to that office wasn’t returned Saturday evening.
