State police marine patrol finds missing diver’s body
The New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol has recovered the body of a missing diver in Portsmouth.
Police said the body of 69-year-old Anthony Rahn was recovered from the Piscataqua River on Saturday, two days after he did not surface while checking lobster traps.
Police said they received a 911 call Friday morning about a diver who had not resurfaced near the Sarah Long Bridge. Crews searched for Rahn throughout the day and resumed the search Saturday morning.
Volunteers assist Audubon with annual count of loons
About 900 people assisted Maine Audubon with its 30th annual loon count Saturday. Similar counts took place in Vermont and New Hampshire.
Volunteers used binoculars at Maine lakes and ponds to count loons as they have since 1983, with a goal of protecting loons and their habitat. The data will be used by Maine Audubon and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
Susan Gallo, director of the Maine Loon Project, said the number of chicks in the southern half of the state has not changed appreciably since 1983 and that the number actually dropped last year. In 2011, there were 619 chicks, an all-time high. In 2012, however, there were only 178 chicks. This year’s count will determine if it’s the start of a trend, Gallo said.
The population of adult loons has shown steady growth. The total number of loons has grown from 1,800 from the first count to 2,977 in the 2012 count.
Annual Open Farm Day welcomes visitors Sunday
Nearly 100 Maine farms are opening their barn doors to the public for the state’s annual Open Farm Day.
During Sunday’s event, visitors can watch farm activities and demonstrations or get their hands dirty by gathering eggs or feeding calves. Farmers also have farm-raised products for sale and samples to taste.
Open Farm Day is put on by the Department of Agriculture and gives the public an opportunity to learn firsthand about the state’s farms.
Visiting hours are generally from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with some farms extending their hours.
