Police seeking suspect after woman is kidnapped, killed

Boston police say a 24-year-old woman was fatally stabbed after being kidnapped in the South Boston neighborhood and forced to drive to five banks.

The body of Amy Lord, a Wilbraham native and 2011 graduate of Bentley University, was found Tuesday afternoon by a bicyclist at the Stony Brook Reservation.

Police said Lord may have been on the way to the gym when she was kidnapped Tuesday morning. Her car, which was located later, had been set afire. Police said Wednesday that no arrests have been made in the killing.

Early Wednesday, a 28-year-old man identified as Edwin Alemany, of Boston, was arrested in an attack on another woman in South Boston. The victim of that attack was stabbed, but survived.

FBI veteran named agent in charge of Boston office

The FBI’s Boston office has a new leader.

Vincent Lisi will succeed Richard DesLauriers as special agent in charge of the Boston office. DesLauriers announced last month that he was retiring after more than 26 years with the FBI.

Lisi has been with the FBI since 1989, serving most recently as deputy assistant director of the Counterintelligence Division in Washington, D.C. In 2001, Lisi helped lead the investigation of the anthrax letter attacks. He also served as a legal attache in Yemen.

DesLauriers had served as special agent since July 2010 and was a key figure in the probe of the deadly Boston Marathon bombings. He said he was most proud of his role in the apprehension of reputed mobster James “Whitey” Bulger.

Bill seeks sales tax holiday to boost summer shopping

Shoppers in Massachusetts could be looking ahead to another summer tax-free weekend.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo said Wednesday that lawmakers are planning to take up a bill next week to create the sales tax holiday.

DeLeo said that even though the state’s economy is continuing to improve, the tax holiday will be a boost to consumers and shop owners.

Under the legislation, the sales tax holiday would be scheduled for Aug. 10 and 11 and would apply to retail sales excluding any single item priced higher than $2,500.

Sales-tax holiday weekends have become something of a tradition in Massachusetts during the dog days of summers as lawmakers hope to give a boost to businesses and consumers during a typically slow shopping season.

Voting law allows students to use their college ID cards

Gov. Maggie Hassan has signed a voter identification bill that accepts New Hampshire student IDs during an election.

Under the law signed Wednesday, valid student identification will be allowed if the card is issued by a college or career school in New Hampshire or a New Hampshire high school. Student IDs can be expired, but the expiration date must have been within five years. The old law ended acceptance of student IDs on Sept. 1.

The bill postpones until 2015 a requirement for people who sign an affidavit instead of presenting an acceptable ID to have their picture taken at the polls.

Moderators also can verify a person’s identity or allow IDs not specified by law.

Explosion blows out a wall just after couple buys house

Authorities say a couple had just closed on a house in Conway, N.H., when it exploded.

Conway Fire Chief Steve Solomon told WMWV radio that firefighters responded shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday to the two-story house and found light smoke, with the house’s windows and one wall blown out.

He said the man and a woman who had just closed on the house were inside it on the second floor when the explosion happened. They managed to escape without injury.

The house was believed to have been unoccupied for some time.

The state fire marshal’s office is assisting with the investigation.
