Quenneville gets a three-year extension from Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks

The Chicago Blackhawks and Coach Joel Quenneville agreed to a three-year contract extension that will keep him with the NHL champions through the 2016-17 season.

The extension came as no surprise after he coached the Blackhawks to their second Stanley Cup in three years. Quenneville’s deal was set to expire after the upcoming season. He is 222-106 in five seasons in Chicago..

The St. Louis Blues signed goaltender Jake Allen to a two-year-contract after he went 9-4-0 with a 2.46 goals-against average to lead rookie goalies.

Right wing Kyle Palmieri re-signed with the Anaheim Ducks, agreeing to a three-year deal worth $4.4 million. He had 10 goals and 11 assists in 42 games last season, his first full NHL campaign.

SWISS OPEN: A day after Roger Federer lost citing back pains, Stanislas Wawrinka retired from his quarterfinal match at the Swiss Open in Gstaad with the same injury.

The second-seeded Wawrinka stopped after a medical timeout more than 2 hours into his match with Feliciano Lopez, who was leading 6-4, 2-6, 4-3.

ATLANTA OPEN: Top-seeded John Isner advanced to his fourth straight Atlanta Open semifinal berth, beating James Blake 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5). Isner will face seventh-seeded Lleyton Hewitt, the Australian who beat third-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia 1-6, 6-3, 6-0.

CITI OPEN: The top-ranked doubles team of American twins Bob and Mike Bryan pulled out of next week’s Citi Open, citing an injury to Bob’s shoulder. The Bryans haven’t played since July 6 at Wimbledon.

DOPING: Sprinter Tyson Gay failed more than one drug test this year, recording one of his positives at the U.S. championships in June, where he won the 100 and 200 meters, The Associated Press learned.

Earlier this month, Gay revealed he had tested positive in an out-of-competition test he took May 16. Three people familiar with the case told the AP that Gay had multiple positives this year.

FCBL: Five pitchers combined on a six-hitter for the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (18-22) in a 1-0 win over the Seacoast Mavericks (18-24) at Portsmouth, N.H.

NBA: The Dallas Mavericks re-signed center Bernard James and officially added free agent shooting guard Wayne Ellington.

The Milwaukee Bucks signed free-agent center Miroslav Raduljica, adding a 7-footer who has played the past seven years in Europe.

The Brooklyn Nets agreed to a deal with Alan Anderson, who averaged 10.7 points with Toronto last season.

PGA: Hunter Mahan birdied the final three holes for an 8-under 64 and a two-stroke lead at 13-under 131 after the second round of the Canadian Open at Oakville, Ontario.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Mark Wiebe of the United States shot a 5-under 65 to share the lead with Bernhard Langer at 135 after the second round of the Senior British Open at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Rikard Karlberg of Sweden shot a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead over four others after the second round of the Russian Open in Moscow.
