Data shows Maine moving away from religion
Every 10 years, the national Association of Religion Data Archives collects data by state on religious affiliation. The 2010 report, released last May, ranked Maine as the least religious state in the country, with only 27.6 percent of residents aligning with a particular religion, compared to the national rate of 48.8 percent. From 1980 to 2010, the membership shifts within each religious group varied widely in Maine, but the overall trend has been toward secularism.
