PORTLAND — City firefighters have contained a fire in an apartment building at 96 Whitney Ave., one of two fires in Portland Thursday morning.

Crews were called to the house fire at 7:22 a.m. upon reports of a possible furnace malfunction at the apartment building. Responding firefighters found smoke coming from the walls on several floors. They determined that the cause of the fire was the furnace.

It was the second fire of the morning. Crews quickly extinguished a fire in a garage on Joseph Avenue off Ray Street about 6:22 a.m. after receiving reports of heavy, black smoke coming from the single-family home. The fire was contained and damage was limited to the garage and attic, according to a release from the city of Portland. The cause is under investigation.

City officials said they do not believe there is any connection. No one was injured in either fire and no tenants were displaced in the apartment building fire.
