Bruins dole out a promotion and hire former player Axelsson as European scout

NHL: The Boston Bruins promoted Keith Gretzky to director of amateur scouting and hired P.J. Axelsson, who played 11 seasons with the team, as a European amateur scout.

Gretzky, the younger brother of the Hall of Famer, joined the Bruins organization in 2011 as an amateur scout.

The Bruins also renewed their affiliation with the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL.

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Sheldon Souray will be out four to six months after undergoing wrist surgery on July 25, the team said Tuesday.

BASEBALL

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES: Austin Oh drove in two runs to cap a six-run third inning, leading Sammamish, Wash., to a 6-5 win over Nashville, Tenn., in an elimination game Tuesday at South Williamsport, Pa.

Jose Gonzalez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cap a four-run rally in the final at-bat, lifting Aguadulce, Panama, to an 8-7 win over Taoyuan, Taiwan, in an elimination game.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Cavaliers signed Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft. Financial terms were not immediately known, but the deal can be worth up to $22.8 million over four years.

The Milwaukee Bucks signed Larry Sanders to a multiyear contract extension after the 6-foot-11 center broke out with career highs of 9.8 points and 9.5 rebounds last season. Terms of the deal were not announced.

WINSTON-SALEM OPEN: American Mardy Fish retired because of heat stroke during the third set of his second-round match at Winston-Salem, N.C. Jarkko Nieminen, the No. 11 seed, was leading Fish 7-5, 6-7 (3), 3-2.

NEW HAVEN OPEN: Defending champion Petra Kvitova, the third seed, held on for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win Tuesday over Annika Beck in the first round at New Haven, Conn.

COLLEGES

WOMAN OF THE YEAR: Elena Crosley, a 2013 Bowdoin College graduate, is one of 30 NCAA Woman of the Year finalists.

The award honors graduating athletes who have distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership. Crosley, a top defender on the field hockey team, earned a degree in mathematics last spring.

The field will be winnowed to nine next month, with the winner announced at an event in Indianapolis on Oct. 20.

SOFTBALL: The University of Maine announced Chloe Douglass of Orono and Shelby Obert of Norridgewock (Skowhegan High) will play for the Black Bears this season.
