PORTLAND — Portland is assured of having at least one new city councilor and two new school board members after ballots in the Nov. 5 municipal election have been counted.

At-large City Councilor John M. Anton and school board members Jaimey Caron and Kate Snyder, did not meet Monday’s 4:30 p.m. filing deadline for nomination papers, according to Bud Philbrick, Portland’s election administrator.

Though Philbrick was still in the process of certifying signatures Monday — candidates are required to submit a minimum number of signatures from registered voters in order to get their name on the ballot — several candidates had reached the signature threshold.

Philbrick said that Wellington M. Lyons, a lawyer, who ran unsuccessfully against Councilor Nicholas Mavodones last year, and former state Rep. Jon Hinck will compete for Anton’s seat — a three-year at-large term.

At-large City Councilor Jill Duson will be challenged by Gregory J. Smaha, a Portland native. Candidates Christopher W. Shorr and Matthew W. Coffey met the filing deadline for Duson’s seat but had not been certified as of Monday.

City Councilor Edward J. Suslovic will have to fend off challenger Gregory A. Blouin in order to keep his District 3 seat.

Caron currently serves as school board chairman. Snyder chaired the board before Caron.

Voters will elect two at-large school board members from a potential field of six candidates.

Philbrick said that former Portland mayoral candidate Ralph Carmona, Frederic A. Miller and Pious Ali have all been certified as candidates. Anna Trevorrow, Deborah Brewer and Gene D. Landry met the filing deadline for school board but have yet to be certified.

Incumbent school board member Laurie J. Davis is running unopposed in District 3.

Three candidates met the filing deadline for five seats on the Peaks Island Council: Marjorie Phyfe for a three-year term and Jean Martens and Timothy Wyant for a one-year term.
