BRUNSWICK — The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority will receive $444,600 in federal funds from the Department of Transportation to improve the Brunswick Executive Airport on the site of the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.
The authority will receive three grants from the DOT’s Military Airport Program, including:
— $189,510 to repair the roof on Hangar 5;
— $181,350 to design a snow removal equipment building;
— $73,800 to design improvements to the airport’s drainage system to handle stormwater runoff.
“Converting and improving facilities at the former base so they can be used by Brunswick Executive Airport is a crucial step in the site’s redevelopment,” said U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, who released a statement Tuesday on the funding.
“I’m glad MRRA will be able to use these funds to support the airport’s growth and competitiveness. In only two years since the base’s closure, new businesses at the redeveloped site have created over 200 jobs and are poised to hire hundreds more. It’s important that we keep that momentum going with this investment.”
