The New England Patriots signed tight end Matt Mulligan – a native of Enfield and graduate of Penobscot Valley High School – to the 53-man roster. Mulligan, 28, was among the last players cut by the Green Bay Packers on Aug. 31.
The 6-foot-4, 267-pounder played at the University of Maine after not playing in high school because PVHS did not have football.
Mulligan has played four seasons in the NFL with the New York Jets (2009-11) and St. Louis Rams (2012). He has played in 50 NFL games with 20 starts and has 14 receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown.
Last season with the Rams, Mulligan played in 16 games with nine starts and caught eight passes for 84 yards with one touchdown. He’s known more for his blocking skills than receiving skills.
Mulligan joins Rob Gronkowski, Michael Hoomanawanui and rookie Zach Sudfeld as tight ends for the Patriots.
