The University of Maine men’s basketball team will begin its 2013-14 season with a Nov. 8 game at the University of Rhode Island.

Other highlights of the Black Bears’ schedule, released Friday, are the home opener Nov. 10 against Fisher, a road matchup with Connecticut on Dec. 6, and a season-ending rivalry game with New Hampshire on March 2 in Orono.

The women’s schedule, also released Friday, sees the Black Bears hosting North Dakota State to open the season Nov. 14. Maine will host a Thanksgiving tournament that includes a matchup with UMass on Nov. 29.

The Black Bears also play at Syracuse on Nov. 24 and wrap up the season at New Hampshire on March 1.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

USM 3, THOMAS 1: Jordan Grant scored twice in the first half and assisted on Emily Staples’ goal with four minutes left, leading the Huskies (2-1) past the Terriers (0-3) in the first game of the Thomas Invitational at Waterville.

Grant started the scoring in the second minute, then put Southern Maine up 2-1 at the 37-minute mark, 6 minutes after Bronte Howorth’s goal for Thomas.

Southern Maine faces Maine Maritime in the title match Saturday.

CONNECTICUT 1, MAINE 0: Riley Houle’s goal in the 10th minute held up as the Huskies (3-2) edged the Black Bears (3-1) at Storrs, Conn.

Emily Armstrong needed one save for the shutout. Lauren Swant stopped nine shots for Maine.

MEN’S SOCCER

MAINE MARITIME 4, USM 0: Jonathan Reeks scored two first-half goals, which was more than enough for the Mariners (1-1-1) to beat the Huskies (0-3) on the first day of the Husson University Challenge Cup at Bangor.

Nicholas George and Chad McDonnell added goals in the final 18 minutes.

Southern Maine will play Husson in the consolation game Saturday.

FOOTBALL

BOSTON COLLEGE 24, WAKE FOREST 10: Andre Williams ran 35 times for 204 yards and a touchdown, and cornerback Bryce Jones had an interception and a fumble recovery to lead the Eagles (2-0, 1-0 ACC) to a win over the visiting Demon Deacons (1-1, 0-1).

Alex Amidon caught five passes for 93 yards and a touchdown for BC.
