SACO – Varney Kai broke up a scoreless game in the second half, and Westbrook went on to a 2-0 victory over Thornton Academy in an SMAA boys’ soccer season opener Friday.

Luther Williams converted a penalty kick for an insurance goal.

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 2, TRAIP ACADEMY 0: D.J. Nicholas and Jackson Cohan-Smith scored second-half goals to lead the Panthers in an opener at Kittery.

Austin Kidder made four saves to earn the shutout. Forrest Chicoine and Mike McIntosh each had an assist.

GREELY 7, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 0: Nick Pronovost and Jacob Nason scored two goals each to lead the Rangers to a season-opening victory at Fryeburg.

Austin Nowinski, Reed Howland and Ben Leverette also scored.

Fryeburg keepers Blaine Andreoli and Will Zeliff finished with two saves apiece.

KENNEBUNK 9, WELLS 0: Robbie Burns and Griffin Drigotas each scored three goals for the Rams at Wells.

Burns also had two assists, and Drigotas set up one goal.

Brendan Keefe, Stuart Wolff-Goodrich and Andrew Radomski contributed a goal apiece.

Kennebunk keeper Ben Wilson made two saves, while Wells goalie Chandler Bridge stopped 12 shots.

GORHAM 7, MARSHWOOD 0: Tyler Richman scored three goals and Matt Bennett made five saves as the Rams blanked the Hawks in an opener at Gorham.

Cody Elliott, Ethan Orach, Nate Roberts and Jackson Fotter rounded out the scoring.

YORK 12, LAKE REGION 0: Josh Mitchell and Mitchell Hickey each scored three goals for York at Naples.

Michael Gallagher and Sam Rickerich added two goals each.

GREATER PORTLAND CHRISTIAN 3, RANGELEY 1: Sam Whiting scored 39 seconds into the match to start the Lions on their way to a win over Rangeley at South Portland.

Ethan Spaulding and Eddie Daigneault added a goal apiece, and Jeremiah Hammond and David Dabol had assists. Mason Jones finished with five saves, giving up only a late goal to Thomas Clinch on a penalty kick.

Rangeley keeper Dale White made seven stops.

WATERVILLE 3, NOKOMIS 0: Kaleb Kane scored in each half and Cam Gardiner added another to lead the Purple Panthers to a victory in Newport.

Both of Kane’s goals came from about 35 yards.

Liam Edwards had 15 saves for Waterville. Nate Buck had 12 saves for Nokomis.

RICHMOND 5, VALLEY 0: Five players scored unassisted goals as the Bobcats won an East-West Conference opener in Richmond.

Cameron Emmons, Brendan Emmons, Cody Tribbet, Nathan Tribbet and Tyler Soucy tallied a goal apiece. Dustin Sullivan made three saves.

ERSKINE ACADEMY 1, GARDINER 0: Ryan Rodrigue scored with 17:45 left in the first half to give the Eagles an opening win in Gardiner.

Joe York assisted on the goal. Jared Gartley made two saves for Erskine.

Kenneth Moore stopped seven shots for Gardiner.

MT. VIEW 2, MCI 0: Jack Simpson and Bryan Jungels scored a pair of second-half goals on their way to a win over the Huskies in Thorndike.

Joey Danna added an assist.
