BATH — A fire Monday night on a destroyer under construction at Bath Iron Works was quickly brought under control by the Bath Fire Department.

BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini said the fire broke out in an empty storage tank on the DDG-1001 – a Zumwalt-class destroyer that will be named the USS Michael Monsoor.

City firefighters responded around 7:30 p.m. to the shipyard’s 67,000-square-foot Ultra Hall off Washington Street where the destroyer is being built.

DeMartini said the fire was quickly brought under control and employees were able to return to work within 45 minutes.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
