OXBOW— The National Weather Service office in Caribou says it will investigate whether a tornado touched down late Wednesday afternoon in the Aroostook County town of Oxbow.

Oxbow, which is off Route 11, is located to the west of Houlton, just north of Baxter State Park.

Meteorologist Rich Norton said a weather service team will travel to Oxbow on Thursday morning to examine the damage. Witnesses, including a deputy from the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, reported experiencing high winds which they said knocked down a large number of trees.

Norton said the weather service issued two tornado warnings at 4:04 p.m. and 4:27 p.m., around the same time that the deputy reported roads blocked by fallen trees.

Norton said “several” – he could not be more specific – tornadoes have been confirmed this year in Aroostook County. All of those tornadoes have been short-lived, he said.
