AUGUSTA — Gov. Paul LePage ordered the lowering of flags on all public buildings and grounds to half-staff Tuesday, effective until sunset Friday, as a mark of respect for the victims of the shootings at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C.

“On behalf of all Mainers, our heartfelt prayers and condolences go out to those victims, their families and everyone affected by this senseless tragedy,” LePage said in a written statement. “We grieve with fellow Americans and recognize those who dedicate themselves to protecting America and the very freedoms we all share, which are safeguarded by men and women like those at the Navy Yard.”
