Connecticut’s Torza takes one-shot lead in New England Seniors Championship

Bill Torza of Connecticut shot an even-par 70 at the Portland Country Club in Falmouth to take a one-shot lead in the opening round of the 16th annual New England Seniors Golf Championship, hosted every six years by Maine.

Bill Hermanson of Connecticut is in second place after a 71. There are five golfers at 73 — Jack Kearney, Joe Keller and Bob Currey, all of Massachusetts, Bill Hadden of Vermont and Shawn McLoughlin of Connecticut.

The final 18 holes will be played Wednesday.

The leading Maine player is Tom Bean of Augusta, who shot a 75. Phil Pleat of Nashua, N.H., who grew up in Portland, opened with a 74.

SAILING

AMERICA’S CUP: Two races between Emirates Team Zealand and Oracle Team USA were postponed to Wednesday because of high winds blowing against a strong tide sweeping out of San Francisco Bay.

Team New Zealand leads 7-1 and needs two wins to claim the America’s Cup for the second time in 18 years.

FIGURE SKATING: Three-time U.S. champion figure skater Johnny Weir will not be competing at the Sochi Olympics, likely bringing an end to his amateur career.

Weir has not competed since withdrawing from last year’s Rostelecom Cup.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Cristiano Ronaldo scored his second Champions League hat trick to lead Real Madrid over Galatasaray 6-1, and Manchester United, Manchester City and title holder Bayern Munich all opened with victories.

Wayne Rooney scored twice to reach the 200-goal mark for Manchester United in a 4-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

AP GLOBAL POLL: Borussia Dortmund’s impressive display over the weekend earned it first place in the AP poll.

Dortmund routed Hamburg 6-2 on Saturday, and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s two goals put him at the top of the player vote.

TENNIS

ST. PETERSBURG OPEN: Top-seeded Fabio Fognini of Italy reached the second round at St. Petersburg, Russia, beating British qualifier Dominic Inglot 6-4, 6-4.

KOREA OPEN: Top-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 2 Maria Kirilenko won to advance to the second round at Seoul, South Korea.

TRACK AND FIELD

BANNED: Bulgarian sprinter Tezdzhan Naimova, 26, has been banned for life and ordered to return her gold medal from the European indoor championships in March after her second doping offense was confirmed.
