BRUNSWICK – Brunswick used a relentless ground game to score on seven of its eight possessions Friday night and become the lone unbeaten team in the Pine Tree Conference.

The Dragons churned out 576 yards of total offense to roll to a 54-38 win against previously unbeaten Cony.

“They’ve got a really good run game,” said Cony Coach Robby Vachon. “I thought our kids played real good defensively in the second half. Hopefully, we’ll see them again this season.”

Cony beat Brunswick twice last season. The Rams won 34-6 during the regular season in Brunswick, then beat the Dragons 22-21 in the Eastern Class A semifinals in Augusta. Both teams are in Class B this season.

The Dragons had to overcome a tremendous performance by quarterback Ben Lucas to up their record to 3-0.

Lucas completed 36 of 58 passes for 444 yards and threw six touchdown passes to keep the Rams (2-1) in the game.

“The key was staying the course, not getting beat deep and trying to make the make big plays,” Brunswick Coach Dan Cooper said .

The Dragons played especially strong defensively during the second quarter when they forced Cony to punt the ball on two successive possessions.

Led by the running of halfback Lucas McCue and fullback Alex Bondouveres, who both rushed for more than 150 yards, Brunswick built an 32-12 lead during the first half.

The passing of Lucas enabled the Rams to close the gap during the second half when he completed 21 of 25 passes. His sixth scoring pass of the game cut Brunswick’s lead to 46-38 with more than five minutes left.

The Dragons secured the win by marching 66 yards in 10 plays to score the final touchdown of the game with less than two minutes to play.

“They made some great plays,” Cooper said. “We made a few more plays than they did, and that was the difference.”

The score was tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter. The Dragons received the opening kickoff and march 72 yards in nine plays, with McCue scoring on a 38-yard run.

With Lucas connecting on 5 of 6 passes, the Rams responded with a scoring drive of their own. They tied the score when the senior quarterback threw a 41-yard scoring pass to Jonathan Saban.

After an exchange of fumbles late in the first quarter, Brunswick opened an 18-6 lead less than five minutes into the second quarter when quarterback Brady Larson flipped a 17-yard scoring pass to McCue and Bondouveres scored on a 4-yard run following Cony punts.
