Bruins finish preseason with 6-0 win over Jets

Swedish rookie Carl Soderberg scored just 26 seconds into the game, and the Boston Bruins ended their preseason schedule Friday night with a 5-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Johnny Boychuk, Jordan Caron, Nick Johnson and Patrice Bergeron also scored as the Bruins earned their sixth win in seven preseason games.

Boston opens the regular season Thursday night at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Bernhard Langer birdied his first four holes and finished with a 9-under 63 to open a four-stroke lead in the First Tee Open at Pebble Beach, Calif.

Langer, a two-time winner this year on the 50-and-over tour, had nine birdies in his bogey-free round at Del Monte Country Club. He had a 6-under 30 on the back nine — his opening nine.

Defending champion Kirk Triplett, Tom Lehman, Andrew Magee, Mark McNulty and Doug Garwood were tied for second at 67. They also all played at Del Monte. Fred Couples shot a 68 at Del Monte.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Peter Uihlein came within inches of the first 59 on the European Tour when his eagle putt on the last hole veered left in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews, Scotland.

Uihlein, an American, tapped in for birdie for a 12-under 60, equaling the course record.

MCILROY SWITCH: Rory McIlroy said he has ended his contract with one management company and is starting his own.

WEBCOM.COM TOUR: Chesson Hadley had six birdies in his round of 4-under 66 to take a two-shot lead over Joe Durant going into the weekend at the tour’s championship at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

LPGA LEGENDS: Dina Ammaccapane birdied the final four holes for a 6-under 66 to take the first-round lead at French Lick, Ind.

COLLEGES

MEN’S SOCCER: Bowdoin (1-2-2) went through two overtimes for a scoreless tie with Thomas (4-3-1), at Waterville. Bowdoin held an 18-8 advantage in shots through regulation.

FOOTBALL: Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema tweeted that quarterback Brandon Allen, who injured his throwing shoulder two weeks ago, will be back for Saturday’s game against Texas A&M.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Sophomore Donnie Hale decided to transfer from Purdue to find more playing time.

NBA: Center Dan Gadzuric, a veteran from UCLA, signed with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Los Angeles opens training camp Saturday with 19 players.

Minnesota forward Chase Budinger will be out indefinitely to have surgery on his left knee.

GIRLS’ SOCCER: Kat Reid scored in the 30th minute from Kelly Burke as Berwick Academy (6-1) took a 1-0 victory over visiting Concord Academy.

TENNIS

PAN PACIFIC OPEN: Petra Kvitova rallied to defeat Venus Williams 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) and advance to the final at Tokyo against Petra Kvitova.
