CUMBERLAND – Unbeaten Scarborough rallied in two of the three games Tuesday to defeat Greely, the defending Class A volleyball champion, for the second time this season, winning in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23 and 30-28.

Scarborough (8-0) defeated the Rangers (5-2) for the first time in the program’s history Sept. 12.

Red Storm Coach Jon Roberts said the difference Tuesday was a new mental attitude his team found in the second set when it came back from being down, 22-21.

“They served really well and we got down, but we rotated into a position where Abby Mills was able to serve tough,” Roberts said.

“That’s a game that in the past Greely would have typically won, or even stolen a game from us in our own gym. Mentally (Greely) in the past just believed they were going to win. This was definitely the first time I was confident, and the kids were confident, and nobody panicked.”

Mary Cleary lead the Red Storm with nine kills. Kayla Savage had six digs and five kills; and Mills added six aces and five digs. Scarborough setters Lauren Piper and Hallie O’Donnell contributed 13 and 11 assists, respectively.

Roberts said beating the nine-time Class A state champs twice in a season was a big step.

“I think mentally it’s huge for the kids. They were in complete control of the third game. In years past (Greely) would have won it. To say we went into their gym and won, it means something to the kids. They were fired up.”

BIDDEFORD 3, GORHAM 0: Bailey Cote had three aces, six digs and 13 kills as the Tigers (4-4) defeated Gorham in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20 and 25-19 at Biddeford.

CHEVERUS 3. THORNTON ACADEMY 0: Caroline Petitti had four aces to pace Cheverus at Portland.

Maria Nappi added eight digs, and Emma Ryan, Abby Beigel and Steph McKew had four kills apiece.

FALMOUTH 3, SOUTH PORTLAND 1: Paige Carter had four aces, eight kills and a block for South Portland (0-9) in a loss at home. Holly Black added seven kills, two aces and seven digs.
